Report on NCD (Diabetes, hypertension)
Aizawl West district, April & May 2023
- Introduction
Aizawl district is divided into two jurisdictions of Chief Medical Officers- Aizawl East and West.
The National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5, 2019-21) has reported that in Aizawl district, among the age group 15 years and above, elevated blood pressure (Systolic ≥140 mm of Hg and/or Diastolic ≥90 mm of Hg) or taking medicine to control blood pressure (%) is 33.6 and 23.4 in men and women. Blood sugar level - high or very high (>140 mg/dl) or taking medicine to control blood sugar level (%) is 17.3 and 15.2
Screening, diagnosis and treatment initiation are the key factors to reduce the burden of hypertension and diabetes. Dedicated staff, no gap supplies of essential drugs, uniform measuring tools, trained human resources, Information education communication and regular monitoring and supervision are the integral part of the key factors mentioned above.
Aizawl west district has 4 Primary Health Centres, 3 Urban Primary Health Centres and 1 sub-district hospital under its jurisdiction. These institutions submit monthly reports on NCD screening.
NCD screening comprises of screening for hypertension, diabetes, 3 common cancers- cervical, breast and oral.
Prevalence of a disease is calculated as the total cases (new&old) among the population at risk for a period of time.

Conclusion:
The prevalence of hypertension is reported to be highest in Hlimen Primary Health Centre and lowest in Sialsuk Primary Health Centre in the month of April and hypertension is reported to be the highest in Kulikawn Sub-District Hospital and lowest in Sialsuk Primary Health Centre and Sairang Primary Health Centre in the month of May.
The prevalence of diabetes is reported in Lengpui Primary Health Centre, while Sialsuk and Sairang Primary Health Centre has the lowest reported prevalence in the month of April and diabetes is reported to be the highest in Kulikawn Sub-District Hospital, while Sairang Primary Health Centre has the lowest reported prevalence in the of month May.
As a district, the reported prevalence of hypertension and diabetes are 1 and 0.7 in the month of April and 1 and 0.8 in the month of May.
Limitation:
Report on mortality due to NCD related diseases are not available
Recommendations on basis of health service requirements:
1. Patient specific card for NCD
2. No gap supplies of consumables like glucose strips, Tablets- amlodipine tablets (5&10mg), Telmisartan(40mg), Metformin 500mg and Glimepiride().
3. Dedicated NCD staff in all the healthcare facilities
4. Supply of uniform and standardized measuring tools like weighing scale and stadiometer.
5. Training of Medical Officers concerning MO portal
6. Fund for monitoring and supervision
7. IEC materials for all the facilities
Action Taken:
Explanation call letter sent to all facility for those who did not achieve 50% CBAC tablet entry till the month of May 2023
